The Assessment Challenge
Most study tours end with a satisfaction survey. Students rate their experience, institutions check a box, and everyone moves on. But what did students actually learn? How did the experience change their perspectives? What measurable outcomes can institutions report to stakeholders?
At BridgEdu Global, we believe that if immersive learning is valuable, it should be measurable. This article outlines our approach to assessment and the challenges we face in quantifying experiential learning.
Beyond Satisfaction: Multi-Dimensional Assessment
Our assessment framework considers three dimensions:
1. Cognitive Gains
Pre- and post-program assessments measure changes in:
- Technical knowledge (domain-specific concepts)
- Analytical thinking (ability to evaluate complex systems)
- Cross-cultural understanding (awareness of different approaches)
2. Behavioral Observations
During programs, we track:
- Engagement levels in workshops and site visits
- Quality of questions asked during industry visits
- Collaboration patterns in group projects
3. Long-Term Impact
Follow-up surveys (3-6 months post-program) assess:
- Application of learning in subsequent coursework
- Career decisions influenced by the experience
- Network connections maintained from the program
Challenges and Limitations
Measuring experiential learning is inherently difficult. Unlike standardized tests, we’re assessing:
- Tacit knowledge (difficult to quantify)
- Perspective shifts (subjective by nature)
- Long-term impact (requires longitudinal tracking)
We acknowledge these limitations and are transparent about what our data can and cannot tell us. Our assessment framework is a work in progress, continuously refined based on feedback and research.
Case Study: FinTech Module Assessment
In our Singapore FinTech module, we implemented a structured assessment:
Pre-Program: Students completed a knowledge test on financial technology concepts and wrote a brief essay on their expectations.
During Program: Facilitators documented student engagement, question quality, and participation in workshops.
Post-Program: Students completed a technical assessment and reflection essay. They also developed a case study analyzing a fintech company they visited.
Follow-Up (3 months): We surveyed students about how the experience influenced their course selection, career interests, and understanding of Asian financial markets.
Results: While we observed measurable improvements in technical knowledge and analytical thinking, the most significant outcomes were in cross-cultural understanding and industry awareness—areas that are harder to quantify but arguably more valuable.
Transparency and Continuous Improvement
We share our assessment methodologies and results (anonymized) with partner institutions. This transparency helps us:
- Refine our programs based on data
- Provide institutions with evidence for their stakeholders
- Contribute to the broader conversation about measuring experiential learning
We recognize that our assessment framework is not perfect, and we welcome feedback from institutions and researchers to improve our approach.
